How to water your plants correctly

Whether you have a few potted plants at home, an entire garden dedicated to greenery, or have a few houseplants around the house you might know that handling and taking care of plants comes with a certain responsibility. You might of course I am watering my plants correctly, but there could be something wrong with your ways. Let's find out. 

1. Which water to use: Tap water is fine in most cases however if you notice that there is a lot of presence of salt in your water then it can overtime harm the soil you are growing your plant in. Do not use chlorinated water for your plant as well. The best option would be to start collecting rainwater, so not only the water fulfills your plant requirements but is also good for the environment. 

2. Watering the soil and the roots: The most common mistake people when watering their plants is to water the leaves. It is the roots that require you to water them. When you water leaves instead, it can also lead to the spreading of diseases. It also wastes water. 

3. When and how much to water: This is probably one of the most common questions that people when it comes to watering plants. To know when to water, you should know your plant well. Every plant has different requirements. But in most cases, you can tell if your plants need watering. Dry leaves need water. 

When it comes to houseplants you should check whether they need water even once or twice a week. 

While plants do need water, too much water can drown. This happens because roots also need oxygen. If you notice that there is no new growth or the leaves are becoming yellow can be signs you can look out for. You can also check the texture of the soil to understand if you are overwatering it. 


4. Water evenly: When we talk about watering, even if you water sufficiently in terms of the amount you can be making a mistake by watering the soil unevenly. You have to water evenly through the pot to make sure that the roots are watered properly. You can water till you notice some of it dripping through the pot.

5. Keep seasons and temperatures in mind: Your plant will have different seasonal requirements. Summers are usually hot and dry and the sun can be more intense. You might have to increase the regularity of watering your plants- indoors or outdoors. For ferns or tropical plants, you might have to ensure to keep them humid. 

When we talk about houseplants, most of them prefer warm water over cold. If they have waxy leaves do not water on their leaves.

These are some of the things you can keep in mind when watering. The most important thing to do before you get a plant is to make sure you are aware of the requirements it has.
